Matching an original mortar or renders components, colour, and texture can play an essential role in a sympathetic repair or replacement, supporting the longevity and historical character of the building while practically providing a more uniform weathering over time for a long-term attractive finish.
What our service includes

Mortar sampling and preparation
Our in-house laboratory can receive mortar samples by mail with a Mortar Matching Form attached, or if local to the Southwest, a team member can collect onsite. We always aim to use methods that cause as minimal disruption to the surrounding masonry as possible.

Analysis and matching
Utilising their extensive experience, our team will analyse your sample and create various potential matches. Our diverse collection of natural sands allows us to refine the mortar for performance, strength, and workability whilst ensuring a near-perfect colour and texture match.

Sample tablets
After matching a sample, our team can prepare large sample tablets with specific finishes, if requested, to give the most realistic representation of the final product.

Onsite sample placement
After matching a sample, our team will prepare and send small sample bags for onsite placement. These small samples and onsite trails allow for a better representation of the match in situ and the finish’s effect on the overall appearance before larger-scale blending is undertaken.

Manufactured premixed material
Convenient and easy to use, a custom match can be manufactured as a premixed product onsite at our facilities. Premixed products offer quality-controlled production and consistency and can simplify onsite mixing. Our facilities can mix up to three tonnes of product a batch, allowing for the scale required for larger projects.

For a mortar or render a minimum sample size of 43mm in diameter, or roughly the size and volume of a golf ball, is required with as minimal dust or lose rubble as possible. For decorative plaster, a minimum sample size of 193mm, or roughly the size of an average adult’s hand, is required. Please download the mortar matching form for specific guidance on sample requirements to obtain the best quality sample possible to maximise the information we gain.
The lead time for a mortar match is typically 5-7 days but may increase during peak periods, such as spring and summer. If an exact turnaround time is required, please let us know so we can see if we can accommodate your timeline.
Unfortunately, we cannot colour match based on images shown on a screen or sent via email. We will require a physical sample to be sent to our laboratory team.
We always advise taking a sample from an area that reflects the match requirements, representing the desired colour and texture. The weathering of materials is natural process and something we are very familiar with handing. If a particularly dirty sample is unavoidable, we will discuss how we will approach this with you.
