A mortar’s role is essential in the structure, performance and longevity of a building. Identifying a mortar or render’s constituent components is an excellent first step to developing a suitable repair or replacement specification, reducing potential damage to the surrounding masonry and helping to inform the development of an ideal aesthetic match.

Mortar sampling and preparation
Our in-house laboratory can receive mortar samples by mail with a Mortar Analysis Form attached, or if local to the Southwest, a team member can collect onsite. We always aim to use methods that cause as minimal disruption to the surrounding masonry as possible.

We begin with a consultation to understand your requirements and budget and to define the best approach to suit your project requirements. Once defined, we adjust our methods so you get the information you need.

Mortar testing & analysis methods
Each analysis includes microscopy and macro photography to capture key sample features. Additional methods can include thin section analysis, acid digestion, dry sieving, carbonation measuring, and a Munsell colour reference depending on your requirements.

Report and delivery
Once the mortar analysis is complete, the results are provided in a detailed report. Reports are shared digitally as a PDF or a full-colour printed report can be provided upon request.

FAQS
For a mortar or render a minimum sample size of 43mm in diameter, or roughly the size and volume of a golf ball, is required with as minimal dust or lose rubble as possible. For decorative plaster, a minimum sample size of 193mm, or roughly the size of an average adult’s hand, is required. Please see the Mortar Analysis Form for specific guidance on sample requirements to obtain the best quality sample possible to maximise the information we gain.
Lead times for a mortar analysis may vary depending on the level of detail required. A standard mortar analysis typically requires 14 days. The lead time for mortar analyses requiring a thin section analysis service is 6-8 weeks to prepare samples and complete the report. If an exact turnaround time is required, please let us know so we can see if we can accommodate your timeline.
While visual characteristics in a photo can be a helpful starting point, a mortar, render, or plaster sample will be required for an effective and detailed mortar analysis.
